Since the beginning of 2008, Longview police have responded to 35 homicides. Police say they have solved 23 -- or about two-thirds -- of those murders, but the department defines solved as making an arrest, a "no billing" or issuing a warrant for a suspect. That solved rate changes considerably when looking solely at convictions. Of the 23 homicide cases since 2008 that Longview police considers solved, the Gregg County District Attorney's office has gotten nine convictions. Five other cases are making their way through the judicial process. The murder of John Morris, Jr.'s father is among those that remain unsolved.
